Like any other sport, NASCAR is one that sees its athletes achieve milestones.
Whether it be for wins, starts, or championships, they’re all pretty significant and worthy of praise. Here are a list of potential milestones that could be reached this season, according to NBC Sports. We’ve selected a few we think are most likely to happen.
Jimmy Johnson is currently tied in sixth place with Cale Yarborough for most career Cup series wins, but with one more he’ll move into a tie for fourth with Darrell Waltrip and Bobby Allison. With two wins in the upcoming season he’s be in sole possession of fourth place on the all-time Cup Series wins list. If Johnson manages to snag a victory it would also be his 17th consecutive year with a win, which would place him in a tie with David Pearson. The all-time record is 18 consecutive years with a win which is held by none other than Richard Petty.
The Wood Brothers are one win away from their 100th win in NASCAR in the Cup Series. If driver Paul Menard can capture a checkered flag it would equal the 100th win for Wood Brothers Racing, which is the oldest active team in NASCAR, founded in 1950. Menard has been close a few times in the last few years, maybe 2018 will be the year.
Kyle Busch is one pole away from having one in 11 consecutive seasons. If he manages that feat it would move him into a tie for eighth on the all-time list with Bobby Allison and Ryan Newman. Busch won eight poles in 2017, so the odds of him grabbing one this year are pretty decent.
Kevin Harvick is just three career wins shy of 100 across the top three series in NASCAR. He has 37 wins in the Cup Series, 46 Xfinity wins, and 14 in the Camping World Truck Series. He had two wins in the Cup Series last season. If he can outdo his total from a year ago, he’ll be sitting pretty at 100 for his career.
Johnson and Ryan Newman are both on pace to surpass 600 career starts. Newman is 16 starts away and Johnson needs 21 to reach the milestone. With 36 races on the season, the two should be reaching the goal about a month apart. Only 28 drivers have surpassed the 600 start mark, and if all goes well, that number will grow to 30 shortly after the mid-season mark.
The upcoming season will be one filled with potential milestones for Johnson, but if there’s also one potential milestone that isn’t on the list and it’s never been done before. If Johnson can manage to win the Cup series championship, he’d be alone at the top with eight.
