Ford on Tuesday took the covers off a redesigned Focus in hatchback, sedan and wagon body styles.

The car represents the fourth generation of the popular compact and is due in most markets later this year. Unfortunately the United States will have to wait until the fall of 2019 meaning we’ll see it arrive as a 2020 model.

And we’ll likely only get the hatch and sedan variants, to be sourced from either China or Europe depending on the model. Recall, Ford is retooling the current Focus’ plant in Michigan for Ranger and Bronco production.

Ford is holding back specifications for the U.S. until closer to the market launch but we know the car is similar in size to the current Focus but has more space thanks to a longer wheelbase and flatter floor. The car is also said to be a better handler thanks to a new chassis and suspension design that ups torsional rigidity by 20 percent. There’s also driving modes selector complete with Sport mode.

2020 Ford Focus

For most markets you’re looking at a powertrain lineup consisting of 1.0-liter turbocharged inline-3 and 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 gasoline engines, and a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 diesel. These can be matched to either a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic. It’s likely the U.S. will see the 1.5-liter engine and possibly a hybrid option, as well as eventual successors to the ST and RS performance models.

Inside, things are said to be markedly different to what we’re used to in the current Focus. Dominating the cabin will be the infotainment system’s display screen located at the top of the dashboard’s center stack. An 8.0-inch touchscreen will be available along with other features including Wi-Fi, a motion-activated liftgate, telematic services, and a wireless charging pad for mobile devices. The new Focus will also get Ford’s suite of active safety features, called Co-Pilot360, that includes adaptive cruise control, active lane control, and forward-collision warnings with automatic emergency braking.

Pricing information will be released closer to next year’s market launch but expect the starting figure to come in slightly below $20,000. The list of rivals includes the Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic, Mazda 3, Subaru Impreza, Toyota Corolla and Volkswagen Golf/Jetta.
